Benedict Cumberbatch talks Sherlock vs Alan Turing roles

In upcoming biopic The Imitation Game, Benedict Cumberbatch gives arguably his best performance to date as pioneering codebreaker Alan Turing.

While the two performances are notably different, there are comparisons to be drawn between Turing (as written by Graham Moore) and Cumberbatch's modern-day Sherlock – both share a dazzling intellect, a disregard for social norms and a blind spot for knowledge that doesn't directly affect their work.

When Digital Spy caught up with Cumberbatch to discuss The Imitation Game, the entertainment news agency asked him to deconstruct the differences between the two characters.

"[Turing] is a quiet hero, that's the most important distinction," Cumberbatch explained. "There's no soapboxing with him, he's not an extrovert like Sherlock is, there's huge level of bravura and showing-off that goes with Sherlock's skills."

In the video featured by Digital Spy, Cumberbatch gives full analysis of the two characters, discusses The Imitation Game and Hamlet.

The Imitation Game is released in the UK on November 7, and in the US on November 21.
