Magnitude-7.0 quake strikes off Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck northwest of Japan's Ryukyu Islands on Friday, November 13 but there was no immediate tsunami danger to the U.S. West Coast, British Columbia and Alaska, the National Tsunami Warning Center said, according to CNN.

The quake was about 90 miles off the western shores of Makurazaki, Japan, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

"Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, the earthquake was not sufficient to generate a tsunami," the warning center said Friday.
