Justice Minister visits Nubarashen prison to hear inmates’ concerns

Justice Minister Srbuhi Galyan and Head of the Penitentiary Service Tsovinar Tadevosyan have visited the Nubarashen penitentiary institution, according to the Ministry of Justice.

The minister met with 15 inmates serving life sentences, listening to their concerns and problems. The discussion primarily focused on various aspects related to the conditions of their detention.

Galyan assured the inmates that their raised issues and concerns continue to receive close attention from both the ministry and herself personally. They also discussed the possibility of utilizing the professional skills of two inmates in the field of programming to organize educational courses for others.

During the visit, the minister inspected newly renovated rooms for long-term visits, as well as the conditions of the children's room intended for short-term family visits.

On April 3, the Human Rights Defender's hotline received a report alleging that masked individuals had used violence against life-sentenced prisoners at Nubarashen. The Penitentiary Service later stated that officers from the Special Unit, together with prison staff, had conducted operations to address violations of internal regulations. The inmates were forcibly removed from their cells, which were then searched.
