With organization of services in Armenian and Greek churches, Turkey is preparing for the EU report to be issued in October, an Armenian expert said.
“Turkey just wants to show progress in national minorities-related issues,” Artak Shakaryan told a news conference on August 18.
“Rejecting official participation in the liturgy in Holy Cross church, Armenia can demonstrate unwillingness to play a Turkish game. However, absence of Armenians can damage RA foreign policy,” he noted. “Armenia should use this liturgy is a precedent in case adequate politicians come to power on Turkey one day. Besides, if the Mayor of Van sees the benefit the province can gain from tourists, he will raise the issue in the government.”
“Armenians must remind Turkey about another 900 churches which should be opened for divine services,” Shakaryan concluded.
