Azerbaijan attempted to involve Turkey in IPA CIS, but failed

On May 15-17, a delegation of the Armenian National Assembly participated in a sitting of 3 standing committees of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent (IPA CIS) in Saint Petersburg.

Member of the Armenian delegation to the IPA CIS Eduard Sharmazanov told a press conference in Yerevan that, as part of a sitting of the Council of the IPA CIS, Turkic-speaking countries made an initiative to provide Turkey with observer’s status in the IPA CIS, thus creating a new platform for Ankara’s anti-Armenian activity.

“The Azerbaijani delegation offered to unite in one package the matters of provision of TURKPA (Parliamentary Assembly of the Turkic Speaking Countries) and Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy with observer’s status in the IPA CIS. However, we noted that these are two different organizations, and provision of observer’s status to them should be considered separately,” said Sharmazanov. Eventually, the Azerbaijani side was forced to vote against its own project.
