Poll reveals RPA, Prosperous Armenia as election race leaders

Cooperation Women’s NGO, member of the Karat Coalition, a Central Eastern European network of women's NGOs, conducted a nation-wide survey on April 14-22 to study the public opinion about the political forces participating in the 2012 elections to the National Assembly of Armenia.

“The survey findings show that the real preferences of voters are distributed as follows: 28.2% of respondents trust the Republican Party of Armenia and 22.4% rely on Prosperous Armenia party,” representatives of the NGO stated.

According to the poll results, Orinats Yerkir, Communist Party of Armenia, United Armenians Party and the opposition Armenian National Congress bloc do not overcome the 5% threshold yet.

52% of survey participants will take part in the voting, while distrust to possibility of ever holding free and transparent elections in Armenia along with the atmosphere of fear are identified to be major reasons for non-participation.

The poll comprised Yerevan and two Armenian provinces, Shirak and Armavir. The first was selected as a province relatively remote from the capital, while the second was chosen as a nearby community.

In Yerevan, the study was conducted in central Kentron, as well as Arabkir and Shengavit districts.

1200 Armenian citizens participated in the poll, 300 from each province and 600 in Yerevan (200 from each district).
