Last week the UN marked 1,000 Days to the end of 2015, before the target date to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), with UN Secretary-General stressing the need to speed up the program implementation on national level to eradicate world poverty.
Representatives of media companies, NGOs and UN member-countries attended the event, with Armenia's Permanent Representative to the UN Karen Nazarian among them.
Armenia issued an address on the occasion, welcoming the UN Secretary-General's initiative and stressing the need for sustainable economic development through creation of equal competitive opportunities.
The eight time-bound MDGs address poverty and hunger, education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, combating AIDS, malaria and other diseases, environmental sustainability and a global partnership for development. According to UN figures, since the MDGs were adopted by all UN Member States in 2000, global extreme poverty rate has been cut in half and two billion more people have gained access to safe drinking water.
