Oskanian, Jagland discuss Yerevan city council polls

Prosperous Armenia party’s parliamentary group member, former Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland.

2013 presidential polls in Armenia, the post-election developments, the upcoming Yerevan city council elections, the current political situation and possible institutional reforms were discussed during the meeting.

Oskanian said Armenia’s chairmanship of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers is timed to significant political events, which may foster the democratic processes in the country. He noted the absence of checks and balances as the only impediment to Armenia’s democratic development, voicing hope for the establishment of the mechanism during May 5 Yerevan city council polls.

Oskanian further urged the Council of Europe to intensify involvement in ensuring the monitoring of the implementation of the provisions of the Association Agreement, the ex-minister’s office reported.
