Peter Strickland’s Berberian Sound Studio topped the international competition of the Buenos Aires Independent Film Festival, which closes this weekend. The film also received a Best Cinematography Award for Nic Knowland, given by ADF, the local cinematographer’s association. The announcement was made at noon today by fest director Marcelo Panozzo, The Hollywood Reporter said.
The Best Director Award went to Matt Porterfield for I Used to be Darker, while Antoine Cattin and Pavel Kostomarov’s Playback received a Special Mention. Jazmin Lopez’s Lions won the Special Prize from the jury, composed of Veronika Franz, Chinlin Hsieh, Marie-Pierre Macia, Peter Mettler, and Argentine filmmaker and former Bafici director Andres Di Tella.
Francesco Carril won Best Actor for Jonas Trueba’s Los ilusos (Spain). The female cast of Matias Piñeiro’s Viola (María Villar, Agustina Muñoz, Elisa Carricajo and Romina Paula) received a collective Best Actress award. Piñeyro’s fourth film also won the FIPRESCI Award. In the Argentine competition, Santiago Loza’s La Paz picked the Best Film award, while Best Director went to Raul Perrone for P3ND3J0S. Alejo Moguillansky’s El loro y el cisne received a Special Mention.
In the renovated and eclectic section Avant-Garde and Genre, the Great Prize went to Eloy Anciso’s Arraianos. Chilean indie hit Young and Wild (Marialy Rivas) won the Best Feature Length Film award within that competition, while Goya winner A Story for the Modlins picked Best Short.
