Soderbergh to direct Clive Owen in period medical drama “The Knick”

So much for taking it easy after directing "Behind the Candelabra" for HBO. Stephen Soderbergh is in talks to team up with Clive Owen on a 10-episode period medical drama for Cinemax, TheWrap said citing Deadline.

"The Knick" is set in downtown New York at the beginning of the 20th century and focuses on the groundbreaking medical staff at Knickerbocker Hospital, where the boundaries of medicine are being pushed in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.

Soderbergh, who declared his intent to retire two years ago but apparently is only retiring from feature film production, would direct every episode, as well as executive produce with series star Owen, and long-time Soderbergh collaborate Gregory Jacobs.

Pilot writers Jack Amiel and Michael Begler will also executive produce with Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and Gregory Jacobs.

"Candelabra," Soderbergh's supposedly final feature-length film, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews and debuts on HBO this weekend on May 26.
