Universal Pictures has acquired the feature rights to The School for Good and Evil, a package to adapt the new book trilogy by author Soman Chainani, The Hollywood Reporter said.
Joe Roth and Palek Patel are producing the film along with Jane Startz. Chainani will write the screenplay with Malia Scotch-Marmo (Hook).
Good and Evil follows the story of best friends Agatha and Sophie who are selected to attend The School for Good and Evil, where they will be trained as either fairy tale villains or heroes. The book hit stores in the U.S. from HarperCollins on May 14. U.K. stores get it June 6.
Since producing Alice in Wonderland, Roth has explored the wide world of big-budget fantasies, most recently producing Oz the Great and Powerful. He worked with Universal on Snow White and the Huntsman.
Startz’s producing credits include Ella Enchanted and Tuck Everlasting.
