Johnny Depp's new film, in which he will play Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, will be released Sept. 18, 2015, studio Warner Bros. announced, according to The Hollywood Reporter said.
The date would appear to make the movie a prime candidate for a debut somewhere on the 2015 Venice/Telluride/Toronto film festival awards circuit.
Scott Cooper is directing the crime drama for Warners and Cross Creek. It also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Adam Scott, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple and Jesse Plemons.
The project is based on the book Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a Devil's Deal, by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. Originally called Black Mass, the project is currently untitled.
