Google is taking developer orders for its Project Ara modular smartphone test kits, Digital Spy said.
The handsets, which are not expected to be commercially available until 2015, consist of a series of separable phone components that users can splice together depending on personal preference.
Modules are attached via a simple slide and magnetic lock system, and users will be able to create their own personalised components via a 3D printer.
The pre-release test kits will allow hardware developers to field test components for the device and enter the Project Ara Developer Prize Challenge.
Google is handing out $100,000 for the best fully-working module created by September 30, and is assessing entrants based on "technical experience and the strength of [their] module concept".
The Project Ara tester kits will be shipped out before the end of the month, with a second tester period commencing immediately and lasting until August 17.
