Microsoft has announced that its Office suite is now free to use on iPad, Digital Spy reports.
An Office 365 subscription is no longer required to carry out basic editing and store documents in the cloud, but advanced editing tools are still locked behind a paywall.
The news follows confirmation that Microsoft has entered an agreement with Dropbox to integrate its cloud storage service into Office on mobiles, tablets and home computers.
New Office apps for iPhone and Android tablets – which are also free to use – have been released to take advantage of this functionality, although the Android app is currently in public beta.
The iPhone app has been given an overhaul from the ground up, with a refined interface optimised for the smaller screen, and separate applications for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Microsoft is also working on a touchscreen-optimised version of Office for Windows tablets, but this is not expected to arrive until Windows 10 launches next year.
