Amazon says willing to move drone testing abroad

Amazon has told the U.S. authorities that it is willing to carry out its delivery drone tests overseas if they do not receive regulatory backing.

The venture has been awaiting approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) since the summer, and the online retailer's patience appears to be wearing thin, Digital Spy reports citing The Wall Street Journal.

"Without approval of our testing in the United States, we will be forced to continue expanding our Prime Air R&D footprint abroad," said the firm's vice president of global public policy Paul Misener in a letter to the FAA.

Amazon has been forced to test its Prime Air programme in countries such as India due to the FAA's strict regulations around the use of drones for commercial purposes.

The Prime Air drones are capable of carrying goods weighing up to 2.26kg direct to customers at speeds of 80kph, allowing them to receive their order within 30 minutes of placing it.

Amazon appears to be gearing up to test the technology in the UK, as recent job listings suggest the firm is recruiting staff with aviation experience in Cambridge.
