Samsung starts work on iPhone 6S chips: report

Samsung has reportedly kickstarted the production of A9 processors, the chipset that is expected to power Apple's next iPhone, Digital Spy said.

The South Korean firm secured the contract to develop the components several months ago and the process is now under way at its Austin plant in the US, according to Electronic Times.

Samsung is said to be developing the chipset using 14-nanometre FinFET technology, which reduces power demands while increasing processing power.

They are also reported to be 15% smaller than existing Apple chips, giving manufacturers more room for other components such as larger batteries.

The first match of A9 processors are expected to be prototype versions for testing, as Apple is not expected to launch new iOS devices until the latter half of next year.

Early rumours surrounding the iPhone 6S suggest that it could be in for a major camera overhaul and a battery upgrade.
