Mozilla has hinted that its Firefox OS operating system could one day be used to power smartwatches, Digital Spy said.
The company's mobile chief Joe Cheng told Computer World that it is aiming to bring the software to new products, such as home appliances and wearables.
"We want to break that single-brand barrier," he said. "We want to make sure what we're building is right for users instead of just another product on the market."
Mozilla has already begun exploring new avenues for Firefox OS, with Panasonic recently adopting the platform for future smart TVs.
Wearables devices running Firefox OS would likely be more affordable than their Android Wear competitors or the Apple Watch, given that the software has largely been used for low-cost smartphones.
Mozilla is yet to officially announce specific plans to break into the wearables market.
