Apple tipped to rival Tesla in electric car market

Apple is rumoured to be planning a move into the electric car market, Digital Spy reports.

Bryan Chaffin, co-founder of The Mac Observer, claims there is evidence to suggest that the iPhone maker could one day challenge Tesla in the sector.

He said: "When I asked one of my sources flat out to put a percentage chance on Apple working on an actual car – rather than some kind of car-related technology – I was told, '80%'. When coupled with everything I've learned since, I'm personally closer to 100%."

Reports that Apple has renewed its interest in the electric car business emerged after the company poached a number of staff from Tesla.

Apple board member Mickey Drexler previously revealed that former CEO Steve Jobs dreamed of making a fully-fledged 'iCar', but this project is not thought to have been taken up by his successor Tim Cook.

The Cupertino firm has already taken steps into the motor industry with the launch of services such as CarPlay and has partnerships with numerous automakers.
