Microsoft inviting users to register for Windows 10 upgrade

If you're a PC user on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you may have noticed a mysterious new icon has appeared on the right-hand side of your taskbar, Digital Spy reports.

Don't worry, this isn't anything ominous, it's just Microsoft inviting its customers to pre-register for their free Windows 10 upgrade ahead of its rollout on July 29, Digital Spy says.

Clicking the tiny Windows logo prompts users to enter their email address to receive an alert when their operating system upgrade is ready for download.

Windows 10 will be a free update for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone users, but it will not be on mobile devices at launch.

The operating system is designed to be a seamless platform that runs across PCs, tablets, smartphones, Xbox games consoles, and more.
