Sony rolls out world’s first 4K smartphone

4K screens are no longer just a living room luxury – Sony has just unveiled the world's first 4K phone, the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, Digital Spy reports.

Despite QHD phones still being restricted to the most costly of high-end handsets, Sony has jumped to the next phase in image quality, bestowing the super high-end Z5 Premium with a 3840 x 2160 pixel panel.

Stretched across the phone's 5.5-inch form, this 4K display provides a somewhat farcically high 806 pixels-per-inch image density. By contrast the stunningly detailed iPhone 6 Plus features a 401ppi panel.

As well as being able to showcase stunningly detailed 4K content, thanks to the phone's integrated 23-megapixel camera, the handset can shoot 4K video footage, too.

Despite its power-hungry display, Sony has claimed the Premium's 3,430mAh battery will last through two days of steady use on a single charge – although this remains to be seen.

4K screen aside, the Xperia Z5 Premium is an impressive device in its own right. The 7.8mm thick, 180g handset plays host to an integrated fingerprint scanner squeezed within the side-mounted power button.
