BlackBerry confirms the launch of its 1st Android phone

After months and months of speculation, BlackBerry has finally announced its first Android device, Digital Spy reports.

The company is planning to release the phone – named Priv – in 2016.

BlackBerry executive chairman and CEO John Chen said in a statement: "Priv combines the best of BlackBerry security and productivity with the expansive mobile application ecosystem available on the Android platform."

Little detail has been disclosed about the divide, and it has yet to be confirmed whether the leaked photos of the BlackBerry Android phone are genuine.

On the specs front, the phone – previously leaked under the codename of Venice – has been tipped to include a 5.4-inch QHD display, a 1.8GHz Snapdragon processor, an 18-megapixel camera, and 3GB of RAM.

It will combine Google's software and services with BlackBerry's love of privacy – hence the Priv name – and physical keys.
