Armenia, EU familiar with cornerstones of new deal

Armenia and the EU will sign a new legal document, First Deputy Minister of Economy told reporters.

According to Garegin Melkonyan, detail-oriented discussions with the relevant structures of the EU started in early 2015, with the results to give common understanding of what will be negotiated and incorporated into a new agreement.

“The Association Agreement with the EU had political, legal and economic components, as well as the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA),” Melkonyan said. “We aimed to maintain a wide range of possible areas of cooperation, at the same time avoiding formulations, contradicting Armenia’s obligations under other international formats. Sectoral cooperation will be conducted in 28 areas.”

Melkonyan added that the new agreement with the EU will not be including the clause on tariffs stipulating for mutual zero customs duties.
