The days of waiting for the postie are almost over – delivery drones are about to become a thing of reality as Google has been spotted testing out its early efforts, Digital Spy reports.
With a number of companies known to be working on drone delivery systems, including Amazon and the Swiss postal service, Google's flying robot tests have made a premature appearance online courtesy of the Twitter account of Sequoia Capital partner Aaref Hilaly.
Shown dropping a seemingly weighty payload before flying off, this is the first official glimpse of Google's Project Wing drones, which the company reportedly hopes will be able to deliver packages to properties within a 5 mile radius in just 5 minutes.
So, how do we know this is Google's flying machine? Well, the footage was not only accompanied by the proclamation: "Watching baby steps of drone delivery, courtesy of Google X," it was also retweeted by Google CEO Sundar Pichai – it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes.
While it looks like Google has got the delivery aspect nailed, it's unclear how the search giant plans to avoid the inevitable kids with big sticks chasing its drones down the street, Digital Spy said.
