Amazon job listing suggests it has major plans for VR

Almost every major tech company has plans for virtual reality, and that now includes Amazon, if a recent job listing at the firm is anything to go by, Digital Spy reveals.

The internet retailer is recruiting a Senior Software Development Manager to head up a team that will create VR experiences for Amazon Video, as UploadVR points out.

The job description suggests that Amazon's plans extend further than creating an app for upcoming VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

"Entertainment is evolving rapidly. The future will not be limited to passive 2D experiences. The Virtual Reality team will explore and create the platform and interface for immersive storytelling," it reads.

"This will include an ingestion and playback platform for Virtual Reality experiences."

The blurb appears to indicate that Amazon wants to create a platform similar to YouTube, but dedicated to virtual reality experiences.

2016 is being widely hailed as the year of VR, with Oculus Rift, HTC's Vive and Sony's PlayStation VR generating a lot of pre-launch hype.

The Rift and the Vive are available for pre-order, with the latter attracting 15,000 advance sales within 10 minutes.
