Garbage roll out lead single “Empty” ahead of new album

Ahead of their upcoming new album and huge world tour, Garbage have unveiled the epic lead single 'Empty', Gigwise reports.

The band’s sixth studio album Strange Little Birds will be released on 10 June – and it's a promising sign of things to come, Gigwise said.

Harking back to the heavier sound of their early material, ‘Empty’ is four minutes of pristine grunge pop, with anxious lyrics offset with razor sharp guitar lines and punky delivery, Gigwise said. “I’m so empty, you’re all I’m thinking about” Shirley Manson half croons, half snarls, over a languid electronic drum beat. It’s simultaneously sharp and spaced out, recalling dreamy-yet-edgy earlier singles such as ‘Not My Idea’.

“To me, this record, funnily enough, has the most to do with the first record than any of the previous records,” Manson has said of the new material. “It’s getting back to that beginner’s headspace. In part, that’s a result of not having anyone to answer to.”

‘Strange Little Birds’ is released on 10 June via the band’s own imprint, STUNVOLUME. The record was made by legendary producer and band member Butch Vig, who has also worked with Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins.
