“OTE International” Greek telecommunication company, which is the holder of 90% of shares of “ArmenTel” Armenian-Greek company, which is the monopolist of the telecommunication sphere of Armenia, negotiates to sell the stocks. As reported by “Arminfo” agency referring to “Bloomberg,” “OTE” president and general manager Lefteris Antonacopoulos stated 2-3 organizations show interest towards “ArmenTel.” In the words of “OTE” vice-chairman George Skarpelis, the company has already got in touch with “Rostelecom” Russian company on the occasion. According to the source, “OTE” is trying to persuade potential buyers that the withdrawal from the South Caucasus is due to the intention to become the dominating operator in the Balkans. “OTE International” company, which bought 90% of “ArmenTel” shares in 1998 at $143 million, has invested $70 million in the development of the telecommunication network of Armenia. It should be reminded that August 29, according to a preliminary agreement, the first hearing on the charge brought by the Armenian government against “ArmenTel” in periodical and intentional violation of the terms of the license, will be heard. International observers note that each time when such hearings are planned, “OTE” spreads rumor on selling “ArmenTel” shares by means of the media.
