Armenia to appoint new Army Chief of Staff after reforms

Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan has said that following structural changes in the Ministry, a Chief of General Staff will be appointed, who will also be the First Deputy Minister of Defense.

"A certain change is happening in the management of the army. It's not a fundamental change, the Armed Forces will be engaged only in the defense of the country, in combat training," Papikyan said in an interview with the Public TV of Armenia on Monday, June 6.

"Procurement, service, provision: other departments within the ministry should deal with all that, starting from rear support, it should be done by non-military. Many things will be delegated."

According to a five-year action plan unveiled in August 2021, the government of Armenia is planning to gradually transition to a professional army and significantly change the structure of conscription. The Army reform plan envisages both structural and conceptual changes, and the government is going to reduce the term of military service and involve more contract troops, taking into account the prospects for the development and improvement of military service.
