13 people arrested after clashes with police in Yerevan

13 people have been arrested in connection with a clash on June 3 between police and protesters in downtown Yerevan, police said Tuesday, June 7.

The police said members of the Resistance movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan tried to break through a police cordon, starting "mass riots" afterwards.

The protesters "hit police officers with stones, metal rods, bottles and other objects, using violence against them," the police said

More than 40 officers reportedly received bodily injuries in the process, some of the injured are receiving inpatient treatment.

An investigation into the details of the incident is underway.

In recent months, protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan have taken to the streets to block major roads in the capital Yerevan and call on the population to commit acts of civil disobedience. Pashinian has come under fire after he and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev agreed to start drafting a bilateral peace treaty to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and set up a joint commission on demarcating the borders.
