Armenia to introduce 6-month enlistment on voluntary basis for women

Armenia will introduce 6-month state-mandated enlistment of women on a voluntary basis, according to two bills approved by the government on Friday, April 21.

After serving in the army for half a year, they will receive an honorarium in the amount of 1 million drams.

The specifics of conscription, as well as the possibility of rejecting compulsory military service before being drafted will be determined additionally.

"I want to emphasize that this project will be implemented within our concept of having a professional army,” said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

“Women can voluntarily be drafted and undergo mandatory 6-month service, which will be normal service and not a walk through the military unit. As a result of those six months of service, they will be discharged and they will return to civilian life. These people will complement the reserve forces of our country's armed forces. There will be people who want to go into professional service, and they will join our army and begin contract military service. Women should become part of the full military service."
