Armenian Ambassador to Moscow Vagharshak Harutyunyan has met with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin and expressed concern about statements coming from Azerbaijan regarding the relations with Armenia.
During the meeting on Wednesday, January 17, an exchange of views took place on regional security issues.
“Ambassador Harutyunyan briefed [Galuzin] on the latest developments in the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Concern was expressed about the latest statements by official Baku,” the Embassy said in a statement.
“The Ambassador emphasized the fundamental principles on which Armenia's position is based regarding the mutual respect for territorial integrity, ensuring the delimitation process based on the latest maps of the USSR and unblocking regional communications based on the principles of sovereignty, jurisdiction, equality and reciprocity between countries.”
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said earlier that Baku categorically rejects Yerevan’s proposal that the delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border should be carried out on the basis of maps from 1975.
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said in late December that the peace treaty should contain a concrete mechanism for delimiting the Armenian-Azerbaijani border such as Soviet military maps printed in the 1970s. Back then, his Azerbaijani counterpart insisted on delinking the border issue from the treaty. He also said that the signing of the treaty depends on the “political will” of the Armenian side.
