BAKU-TBILISI-JEYKHAN OIL-PIPE LINE TO BECOME COURT EXAMINATION SUBJECT IN GEORGIA

Georgian Green Association has brought a suit to the court in connection with the “disputable estimation of the influence of the Baku-Tbilisi-Jeykhan (BTJ) oil-pipe line on the ecological environment”, which was presented as the evidence to obtain the permission for the building of the Georgian sector of the pipeline in November 2002. As reported by “sakartvelo.ru”, the suit is brought against the Georgian ministry of environment and natural resources, the Georgian branch of “BTC Co” company, the ministry of foreign affairs and the Georgian parliament. The Greens state that they will bring to the attention of the court the serious violations of the Georgian legislation, which accompanied the government sanctions for the oil-pipe line building. In the opinion of Green Association leader Manana Kochladze, these violations threaten the ecological security of Borzhomi National Park. She insists that the “ecological permit has been given as a result of great pressure from the “BTC Co” side. Besides, the Greens’ head considers Washington, in every way supporting the project, to have exerted great influence upon the Georgian government in the issue of approving the BTJ. Meanwhile “BTC Co” is planning to begin the building works at the Borzhomi sector by September. In company representatives’ view, the new route is not the way out, as numerous researches showed the insufficiency of the other variants.
