Arman Tatoyan, former Human Rights Defender of Armenia and head of the Center for Law and Justice Tatoyan Foundation, wrote on Facebook that the country’s leadership is openly calling for criminal acts against the Armenian Apostolic Church.
According to Tatoyan, “The head of the executive power, experienced in inciting civil conflict, is now openly calling for criminal actions against the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church, recruiting accomplices.” He added that false agendas are being crafted to divert public attention from real security concerns.
He further stated, “This government, which has failed in governance, disrupted public unity, and encouraged hatred and violence, also openly promotes Azerbaijani and Turkish narratives while fighting against national identity. It has long exceeded its authority. Society is being deliberately kept in a state of chaos and tension, radicalized and polarized to ensure manipulative success. These are criminally punishable acts.”
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan previously stated on Facebook that “it is necessary to take active steps to free the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and organize new Catholicos elections.” He added that a “Coordinating Group” must be formed to manage the organizational matters, and he would take responsibility for selecting the first ten members of this group.
