Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan has raised concerns over the worsening regional military-political climate, pointing out that Turkey is deploying various types of forces to Nakhichevan as part of two upcoming joint military exercises with Azerbaijan.
In an analysis shared on his Telegram channel, he warned: “The situation is critical, the risk of military confrontation is high, and Syunik is the primary target.”
He urged readers to consider the following developments:
◾️ From today until June 30, Turkey is deploying diverse military units to Nakhichevan, about 70 km from Yerevan, for two joint exercises with Azerbaijan.
◾️ For the past 2–3 months, Azerbaijan has been regularly transferring large quantities of weapons and military equipment—both into Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan.
◾️ Three weeks ago, senior officials from both Russia and the U.S. (Defense and Foreign Ministries) issued warnings of a high risk of military conflict around Syunik, near the Iranian border.
◾️ U.S.-Iran talks are at a crisis point. Multiple regional states are signaling a pre-war situation surrounding Iran. The U.S. is evacuating diplomats and military families from Iraq.
◾️ In recent weeks, Azerbaijan has consistently fired on Armenian positions in Syunik.
“These are plain facts,” Geghamyan stressed. “And not even all of them. The rest is for you to analyze. My short conclusion: the situation is in crisis, military conflict is very likely, and Syunik is the main target—from several directions.”
He also criticized Armenia’s current ruling group for distracting public attention from these threats. “The world is preparing for war. And in Armenia, it’s just another Thursday, with the people and national institutions under attack—while external threats go ignored,” he concluded.
