Survey: nearly half of Armenians back joining European Union

According to a sociological survey conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), 49% of respondents in Armenia stated they would vote in favor of the country's accession to the European Union if a referendum were held this coming Sunday.

15% said they would vote against, 31% would not participate, and 5% were undecided, Armenpress reports.

Among those surveyed, 37% believe the primary benefit of EU membership would be enhanced security, while 18% cited economic strengthening. Ten percent pointed to overall national development, 5% mentioned visa liberalization, another 5% emphasized democratic progress, 4% peace, 2% a reduction in Russian influence, 2% a better future, 1% joining civilized countries, and 1% job creation.

Six percent listed other benefits, 2% said there would be no benefits, and 8% either refused or were unable to answer.

The survey was conducted via telephone from June 16 to 26, 2025, targeting 1,505 Armenian citizens aged 18 and over, including those forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh. The margin of error does not exceed ±2.5 percentage points.
