The renowned Italian designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, according to a statement issued Thursday by the Armani Group.
"With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani," the statement read, according to Reuters.
Armani had been widely recognized as a defining figure of modern Italian fashion, known for his refined aesthetic and sharp business acumen. Under his leadership, the Armani brand became a global fashion powerhouse, generating an estimated annual revenue of €2.3 billion ($2.7 billion).
Though he had been struggling with health issues for some time, his absence from Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June marked the first time in his career he had missed a runway show.
Often called "Re Giorgio" — King Giorgio — Armani was famous for his hands-on approach, meticulously managing every detail from the designs to the advertising, even personally adjusting models’ appearances before they stepped onto the catwalk.
The company also confirmed that a funeral chamber will be open to the public in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, with a private ceremony to follow on a date yet to be announced.
