Three genocide memorial pillars to be restored first

The restoration of the Armenian Genocide Memorial pillars was discussed at the latest session of the Scientific-Methodological Council under the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports.

It was decided that after completing the restoration of three pillars, the issue of the remaining ones will be reviewed.

According to the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, participants included not only council members but also representatives of the Chamber of Architects, among them architect Anahit Tarkhanyan, daughter of the memorial’s co-author Arthur Tarkhanyan, as well as representatives of contractor companies and supervising organizations.

After a three-hour discussion, the following decisions were made:

  • approve the current project and continue the restoration of the three pillars already under repair,
  • adjust some project details, particularly concerning structural joints,
  • after completing restoration of the three pillars, address the issue of the remaining ones,
  • ensure proper organization of the construction site.

Public concern has grown online regarding the poor organization of the memorial’s renovation. Former director of the Genocide Museum-Institute Hayk Demoyan staged a protest in Tsitsernakaberd, warning about the scale of damage caused under the guise of restoration. Architect Anahit Tarkhanyan, founder of the Arthur Tarkhanyan Center, also published a video, saying: “Look how the stones were removed. They couldn’t detach them properly, so they broke them off. I couldn’t believe my eyes.”
