The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to a TASS report suggesting that “Pakistan intends to recognize Armenia as a UN member state, thereby securing approval for joining the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU),” Armenpress reports.
“We inform uninformed sources that diplomatic relations between Armenia and Pakistan have already been established in accordance with the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. Accordingly, there is naturally no issue of ‘recognition' at the UN,” MFA spokesperson Ani Badalyan said.
She added that Armenia and Pakistan will, in the context of developing bilateral ties, also discuss cooperation on multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the EAEU, or other structures of mutual interest.
Earlier, TASS cited its sources claiming that “Pakistan intends to recognize Armenia as a UN member state in order to gain consensus for joining the EAEU.” Another diplomatic source told the agency that such processes could take weeks or months but noted that the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace agreement had removed obstacles to this step.
