Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, commenting on the recent ruling of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the March 1 case, stated that the court simply confirmed what had already been obvious.
"The March 1 case, in essence, has been uncovered, and the results of the investigation are now being examined by the courts," he said in a conversation with journalists, as reported by Aysor.am .
The ECHR found that Armenian authorities had violated the right to life of those killed during the March 1, 2008 events. Each applicant representing a victim’s family is to receive €30,000 in non-pecuniary damages, and a total of €35,000 is to be awarded collectively for legal fees and expenses.
Pashinyan emphasized that the ruling should serve as a fresh signal and incentive for Armenia’s law enforcement system to ensure fair trials and full accountability.
"I think the ECHR ruling provides a legitimate opportunity to ask—how long can these trials continue with vague and ambiguous answers?" he said.
He also noted his expectation that justice will be inevitable for all responsible for the events of March 1.
