The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has issued a strong statement in response to the court ruling finding Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan guilty.
According to the statement, "justice has become arbitrary and is openly being used for political revenge."
“The court's verdict against Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan based on blatantly fabricated accusations is a severe blow to justice in Armenia and to the credibility of its judicial institutions.
This shameful ruling, issued amid a climate of hatred and repression, once again confirms that Armenia’s judiciary is entirely subordinate to the will of political authorities.
It is deeply regrettable that justice in our homeland is selective and serves political vendettas through arbitrary rulings.
The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin strongly condemns this unlawful process and will use all legal avenues to seek justice for Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan.
We pray for the Lord to strengthen and protect Archbishop Mikael, Archbishop Bagrat, benefactor Samvel Karapetyan, and all individuals unjustly deprived of their freedom.
‘For the Lord is righteous, he loves justice; the upright will see his face’ (Psalm 10:8),” the statement said.
Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan, head of the Shirak Diocese, has been found guilty and will remain in custody. Within two weeks, additional hearings will be held to determine his sentence.
