Marukyan questions Pashinyan-Aliyev deals amid disputes

The leader of the Bright Armenia party, Edmon Marukyan, commented on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s speech at the UN, where he responded to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s use of the term “Zangezur corridor.”

Marukyan raised the question: “What exactly have Pashinyan and Aliyev agreed on, if there is even debate over terminology?”

He recalled Pashinyan’s UN remarks: “Such an expression does not exist in the documents agreed upon in Washington; it has never been in Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations. I believe my Azerbaijani colleague should clarify what he means by this phrase, because in Armenia it is perceived as a territorial demand and is associated with conflict rhetoric,” Pashinyan said at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

Marukyan continued: “If there is debate over terms, naturally there will also be disagreement over content, because Aliyev thinks he has obtained a corridor, while Pashinyan’s position remains unclear. These disagreements are presented to our people as ‘victories’ and ‘established peace.’ In short, Pashinyan admitted at the UN that there is no consensus on agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan.”

He added that since Pashinyan has neither secured security guarantees for Armenia nor demanded mechanisms for dispute resolution, he should call U.S. President Donald Trump. “Apparently, it was declared that this was the only way to resolve problems. Recently, someone bragged about having Trump’s WhatsApp number. Well then, call him — call him right on WhatsApp,” Marukyan wrote.

At the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had said the phrase “Zangezur corridor” is perceived as a territorial claim on Armenia.
