Uncle of missing soldier arrested for one month

Arsen Ghukasyan, the uncle of missing serviceman Sargis Ghukasyan, has been detained for one month, according to his lawyer Tatev Soghoyan.

The case is being handled by the Avan seat of the First Instance Court of General Jurisdiction in Yerevan, presided over by Judge Masis Melkonyan.

On October 6, law enforcement officers arrested Arsen Ghukasyan and Apijan Sargsyan, relatives of missing soldiers. Sargsyan was later released.

Both face charges related to an incident during a September 29 protest outside Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, including hooliganism and obstructing the lawful activities of officials.

According to Soghoyan, no video footage proves that Ghukasyan struck or threw bottles at any representative of the Military Police or Defense Ministry, as reported by Sputnik Armenia.

The lawyer also emphasized that Ghukasyan suffers from several chronic illnesses, making his detention incompatible with his medical condition.

On September 27, relatives of soldiers missing from the 44-day war gathered near the Ministry of Defense, demanding a meeting with Chief of the General Staff Edvard Asryan and Kamо Vardanyan, former Artsakh Defense Army commander and now advisor to the Minister of Defense. According to the Ministry’s statement, some protesters on September 29 threw bottles and other objects at Military Police officers, though the officers “maintained respectful conduct in response.”
