Father Paren Araqelyan, pastor of the Saghmosavank Monastery, has been detained, according to Father Yesayi Artenyan, Sputnik Armenia reports.
Father Yesayi also stated that law enforcement authorities conducted a search at the residence of Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, head of the Aragatsotn Diocese. He said the bishop was being taken to an investigative department.
Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan is the nephew of the Catholicos of All Armenians, as he is the son of the Catholicos’s sister.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a press conference that “the Catholicosate will be liberated just as Armenia was from Serzh Sargsyan in 2018.” He also called on the public to prepare for a “Great Spiritual Meeting in the central square of Etchmiadzin.”
