Armenia’s Minister of Economy, Gevorg Papoyan, has announced that Russian wheat is being transported by rail from Russia to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory. He made the statement on his Facebook page.
“I have more good news about unblocking. At this moment, Russian wheat is being transported by rail from Russia to Armenia via Azerbaijan,” he wrote.
He also added that Kazakh wheat is currently en route to Armenia and will arrive in the coming days, also passing through Azerbaijani territory.
According to Azerbaijani media, on November 4, a train consisting of 15 wagons loaded with wheat was dispatched from Russia to Armenia via Azerbaijan and Georgia. The total weight of the cargo was 1,048.8 tons, Minval.az reported.
The outlet also reported that a train carrying Kazakh wheat has likewise departed for Armenia via Azerbaijan.
Armenian National Assembly Deputy Speaker Ruben Rubinyan also addressed the matter on his Facebook page, highlighting that this was the first time since the 1990s that cargo had entered Armenia by rail from Russia via Azerbaijan.
“Now, in addition to Kazakh wheat, Russian wheat is also being transported by rail through Azerbaijani territory to Armenia. This means that, for the first time since the early 1990s, imports are arriving in Armenia from not only Kazakhstan but also Russia via Azerbaijan. This is what peace looks like. This is progress,” he wrote.
Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev declared that Azerbaijan had lifted all restrictions on the transit of goods through its territory toward Armenia. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk commented on Aliyev’s statement, emphasizing that Russian Railways is exploring ways to utilize this new logistical opportunity.
