Mane Tandilyan, co-founder of the Country to Live party, stated on her Facebook page that from January to September 2025, Armenia recorded a historic drop in birthrate, while the government is reducing key birth support for third and subsequent children by 2–3 times.
According to her, the number of births during this nine-month period was the lowest in Armenia’s recent history, with a 20% decrease compared to 10 years ago. She noted that comparing with Soviet-era data would be irrelevant.
Despite this, the government has decided to flatten childbirth benefits, setting a fixed amount of 500,000 AMD regardless of birth order.
Under the current scheme, parents receive:
- 300,000 AMD for the first and second child,
- 1,000,000 AMD for the third and fourth,
- 1,500,000 AMD for the fifth child and beyond.
This policy change reduces childbirth support by two to three times for families with three or more children, families for whom the benefits were especially critical. Tandilyan warned that this could worsen poverty among large families and contradict the state’s social responsibility.
She also highlighted that this is the first time in Armenia’s history that childbirth benefits are being reduced, and announced that her party will soon present its proposals on boosting birthrates and supporting population growth.
According to the proposed plan, a flat childbirth benefit of 500,000 AMD will take effect starting September 1, 2026, regardless of the child’s birth order.
