OFFICIAL BAKU CONTINUES DENYING EXISTENCE OF POLITICAL PRISONERS IN AZERBAIJAN

“Azerbaijan’s position on the question of political prisoners is invariable. We consider there are no such in our country.” Head of the Azeri President’s administration Ramiz Mekhtiyev told journalist about it when commenting on the coming visit of the Council of Europe “Ago” group. Concerning the same topic PACE Azeri delegation head Ilham Aliyev confirmed that official Baku had undertaken every possible measures to cause Belgian deputy George Klerfite to fail in the elections of the chairman of CE political prisoners subcommittee. As reported by “Turan” agency, Aliyev motivated his position by saying as if “Klerfite’s attitude towards Azerbaijan is not objective.” At the same time he did not rule out the opportunity of cooperation of the Azeri leadership with the subcommittee on political prisoners. In his words, the decision will depend on “the intentions with which Klerfite arrives in Azerbaijan.”
