At today’s session of Azerbaijan Milli Mejlis deputy of the ruling “Eni-Azerbaijan” party Eldar Ibragimov suggested to extend the term of office of President Heydar Aliyev from five to seven years. “It is important for maintaining stability in the region,” – he said. Many pro-governmental deputies seconded Ibragimov’s proposal. And deputy Anar Akhundzade, motivating the importance of extension of the term of office of the President suggested curtailing a year of the deputies’ office in favor of the head of the state. Speaker of the Parliament Murtuz Aleskerov also agreed with the proposals, pointing out an example from Uzbekistan’s practice. He said they should “deliberate” and “hold a referendum” if necessary.
