OPPOSITION HAS YIELDED ITS POSITIONS

Only two unions and three parties can be named oppositional – the ”Justice” block, the Liberal block, the ”National Unity”, the Communist party and the ”Armenian National Movement”. Together they gathered about 300 thousand votes. In February they managed to mobilize more than 700 thousand people. And this hardly depends from the number of the voters that participated in the elections, because this means that the authorities managed to bring their followers to the polling stations while the opposition failed.

Now it is evident that the most influential pro-presidential political forces will gain a full control over the legislative body. The coalition of the Republicans with the ”Orinats Yerkir” and ”Dashnakstutyun” parties will allow forming a government able to work without taking into account the opposition. No one can say if this is good or bed. But if the results of the elections guarantee the continuation of the policy of the former government, it means that no shocks
threatening the investment field and the economic stability will take place. The President can forget about the initiative of the Constitutional Court urging the deputies of the new assembly to hold a referendum about the trust towards the President. Robert Kocharian managed to have reliable rears. The political parties of the new Parliament will be familiar to us. This is the first time in the history of the Third Republic of Armenia when no representative of the communist party will be present in the parliament. It is interesting that those parties managed to come closer to the 5% barrier, which are financed by the oligarchs and represent first of all the interests of the big and medium business. The national bourgeoisie will be represented in the parliament much broader than it is worth of. It has been provided with an access to law making process with the help of the majority system.
