Among these persons, there was also Polad Sirajev, an active figure of ”Al Qaida”, citizen of Azerbaijan. He was kept for a long time in Guantanamo. He was going to be taken to the tribunal as a participant in terrorist acts. However, taking into account his worthy testimonies (Sirajev betrayed all his comrades to the Americans) they decided to forgive the Azeri terrorist. He was taken from Cuba to the Netherlands in February where he was released. He was forbidden to call Baku and contact his relatives and friends. He has given a written undertaking not to leave Netherlands during the coming several years. The forgiven terrorist has undertaken also never to visit the Islamic states.
The humanism of the American special services towards the Azeri terrorist seems strange. Once the Baku followers of Bin Laden were considered to have played an important role in planning and execution of the most terrible terrorist acts. The American investigation has revealed that the fax with instruction to organize the explosion of the US Embassy in Nairobi has been sent from Baku. It is known that within the period of 1996-1998 Osama Bin Laden has 60 times contacted his accomplices in Baku. According to the Wall Street Journal, terrorist Aiman Al-Zavahiri has several times visited Baku to inspect his representatives. There are facts that in Baku the leaders of terrorists were dealing not only with Arab emissaries but also with their Azeri partners. Rather interesting facts were revealed during the court trial of the former coordinator of the Baku cell of ”Al Qaida”, Abdel Rahman Fahri,. According to ”Zerkalo” quoting ‘‘Al-Masaa” newspaper (Cairo), ”the terrorist was asked, if he had had contacts with Azeri officials and representatives of the opposition. Fahri gave a complete answer to these questions giving names, telephone numbers, addresses,” Zerkalo reads. Despite this, the special services managed to find out only few Azeris that were directly participating in the implementation of terrorist acts. Polad Sirajev is one of them. So, under these circumstances, the decision of the American special services to forgive the Azeri terrorist is much more unexpected.
