Bandwidth speed of broadband Internet in Armenia will reach at least 6-7 Gbps by the end of this year, Samvel Arabajyan , PSRC member told journalists today. According to PSRC data, in January 2010 the bandwidth speed of Internet was 3.6 Gbps in Armenia, and while in 2005 fixed bandwidth internet connectivity was 18 Mbps, in 2008 it reached 115 Mbps. According to Samvel Arabajyan, this positive dynamics was a result of reforms in licensing, enabling some 30 companies to provide Internet services in the country.
In addition to it, the number of fixed broadband Internet subscribers grew 6-7 times (except Dial-up users) compared with the last quarter of 2008. Currently, there are some 70 000 -75 000 subscribers of broadband Internet (3G, WiFi, WiMax, Ethernet, DSL) in Armenia, and with the users of GPRS connection, their number will reach 1.5 million.
The number of Dial-up communication users tangibly reduced. A number of trials occurred around Dial-Up services between end-users and operators due to viruses, generating international calls. Instead of 60 000 – 65 000 subscribers in 2008, 40 000 – 45 000 Dial-up communication end-users have been recorded by late 2009.
"The high number of Dial-up subscribers shows the users not interested in high speed communication and huge traffic. Meanwhile, there is a growing number of users with ever-greater demands for high quality of the Internet, " Samvel Arabajyan said.
