TENSION BETWEEN GREECE-TURKEY RELATIONS DOUBLED

A new turn of escalation of tension of Greece-Turkey relations is observed. Ankara accused Athens of provocation last week. Turkish sources claim the Greek air force pursuit plane had broken in Turkey’s airspace and had made provocative maneuvers. Ankara stated about a similar incident November 15. Meanwhile, a day before, British citizens engaged in espionage information gathering were arrested at one of the Greece’s military bases. As it is presumed the information was for Turkish special services. The new turn of aggravation of the relations between old enemies is taking place against the background of Turkey’s idle attempts to join the European Union. Ankara’s anxiety is doubled with the fact that European committee has included Cyprus in the list of the ten countries that have real basis to claim to the European Union membership. The matter concerns the united Cyprus i.e. the boarders recognized by the UNO. Turkey is categorically against the joining of Cyprus the European Union unless the territorial conflict is settled. As it is known Turkey has occupied the northern part of the island and proclaimed Turkish republic in that territory.
